2019 Projects

Main content start

Five teams will participate in the third edition of the class.

TeslaCarbonLockheed MartinSIMULIA, and Aerospace Corporation will be the industrial partners.

Brief Project Descriptions:

  • Tesla: "Seat Comfort Analysis," the goal is to develop a methodology to evaluate the seat comfort using mathematical and/or numerical models, and/or physical tests.
  • Carbon: "Design of and with Bistable Lattice Structures," the goal is to design lattice structures that can mimic a prescribed distribution of mechanical properties through numerical models, and potentially physical testing.
  • Lockheed Martin: "Weight Minimization for Crushable Structures," the goal is to design "reusable" crushable structures with maximum energy absoption per unit mass through numerical models, made of metals, plastics, or combinations thereof.
  • SIMULIA: "Short Circuit-Driven Thermal Effects in Automotive Batteries," the goal is to create and validate a detailed numerical model of a battery pack fire hazard due to mechanical impact events, and to explore alternative potential designs to reduce the hazard.
  • The Aerospace Corporation: "Design of Additively Manufactured Test Article for Multiaxial Fatigue Fracture Characterization," the goal is to design a test article to mechanically test the fatigue response of additively manufactured parts through the use of numerical models, to be applied in the qualification of parts  for aerospace use.
